TurnFirst Makes First Major Research Grant

December 12, 2016

The TurnFirst Foundation pledged $30,000 to the Huang Laboratory at Georgetown University as our 2016 Roger D. Semerad Award for Research in the Neurosciences.  The Award will support an exciting new phase of the Lab's investigation into a potentially novel therapeutic for enhancing brain repair in Multiple Sclerosis.

To date, principal investigator, Jeffrey Huang, and MD/PhD candidate, Stephanie Davis, have worked with IL411 in animal models of MS.  “When we removed IL411 from animal blood cells,” says Dr. Huang, “we observed uncontrolled inflammation and failed regeneration of myelin (the insulating membrane around nerve fiber that are frequently damaged in MS.) Remarkably, however, by administering IL411 into the animal MS models, we’ve seen significantly improved brain repair and prevented disease progression. This investment by TurnFirst allows us to examine IL411 in the blood cells of MS patients to determine if the modification of IL411 in human cells produces the same outcomes.  It’s the first step to establishing a future clinical trail for testing the effect of IL411 on MS patients.”

The Huang Lab is working with Georgetown’s nationally renowned MS Clinic to gather blood samples from up to 75 MS patients. Results of their IL411 findings in animal models been published this month in BRAIN, a leading international Journal of Neurology.

This award marks the third year of TurnFirst’s support of the Huang Lab and its ongoing investigation into myelin repair. [Read our full Fall Newsletter]
